Plan a firewall change

Make the intended access rules clear before changing production traffic. Express Projects scopes firewall deployment, migration and policy operations around your users, applications and network zones. The change plan identifies dependencies, validation steps, rollback decisions and the team that will maintain the controls.

What to prepare

  • Current topology, policies and required application flows
  • Appliance, virtual or cloud environment, subscriptions and dependencies
  • Security approvers, cutover window and policy-operation owners

What you receive

  • Reviewed traffic requirements and policy-change scope
  • Controlled migration sequence, validation findings and exceptions
  • Configuration references and ongoing policy responsibilities

Logs & review

Check interfaces, policies, VPN dependencies and logging. High availability is a design requirement to validate, not a promise inferred from two appliances.

Conceptual planning view. Final architecture is agreed for the project.

Choose the controls for the traffic

Review existing policies, network zones, remote access and logs. Distinguish next-generation firewalls, SASE, web application firewalls and application delivery: they address different parts of the environment and are not interchangeable procurement labels.

Plan configuration and migration

Scope rule review, VPN, segmentation and high-availability requirements. Check routing, certificates, licenses and dependent services. Agree a staged cutover, validation steps and rollback decision before changing the production traffic path.

Assign responsibility after installation

Record policies, configuration references, test results and exceptions. Decide who reviews logs, approves rule changes, maintains subscriptions and handles incidents. Ongoing policy management and specialist assessments require an explicit recurring scope.

Questions before you start

Protect application access with firewall design, deployment and policy changes, including traffic checks and a controlled transition plan.

Does a firewall replace application security?

No. The relevant network, application and identity controls must be considered separately. A firewall installation does not establish complete protection.

Can you migrate existing rules unchanged?

Rules should be reviewed for purpose, dependencies and compatibility. The agreed plan determines what is retained, changed or removed.
